we're happy to say that since our last post we're feeling much better about queenstown. it's still a bit of a tourist trap but we've had quite a bit of fun, and to tell the truth, it is really beautiful.
last night we took the gondola up to the lookout on bob's peak. it was really very pretty. the remarkables (mountain range behind the city) are quite aptly named. once at the top we took another ski lift to the luge run, donned our helmets (anna couldn't quite find one large enough, but it was close enough), and took our turn at the luge. it was fun. not quite as death-defying as we'd like to be able to tell you it was, but it was a good time. it was so fun we did it again.... this time on the advanced course. (yeah, we're dangerous like that).
today we took a bus to milford sound and then boarded a boat for a "nature cruise." despite only seeing several seals and one dolphin (the penguins were in hiding) and being rained on all day it was easily the most spectacular day of the trip so far. we've been trying to think of a more beautiful place in the world and we haven't come up with anything yet. the pictures we took don't do it justice and i'm not sure i can find suitable words either. although we were a little soggy, the bonus of the rain was that it created hundreds of waterfalls that cascaded down the sheer 3000 foot cliffs into the dark water. it's amazing what ice and water can do to rock given millions of years. the woman behind us (picture a 50-something, overweight american, who's been smoking for 40 years) was pretty orgasmic with each sight. we'd come around a bend in the road and see yet another waterfall and each time she'd exclaim "oh my god!" loudly to herself. once we got to the valley of 1000 waterfalls it was a little like the movie, when harry met sally. you get the idea. once we got to the boat we avoided her for a while.
we've yet to figure out how to actually upload our photos. we're working on it. we promise. in the meantime you can google milford sound. it'll be worth it.
tomorrow we're on to fox glacier for a couple days and then to franz joseph glacier. should be lots more prettiness.
